It wasn't like this!

My year in Games 2015

HOORAY, the year’s over.

After working in games (first apprentice, then programmer) for 7 years, this was my first year with a “normal” job. Now the good things are that generally, work is more relaxed: less hours, more vacation, increased wages (let’s be honest: these things are well-known, especially if you’re an IT guy). The slight negative is that my new colleagues suddenly aren’t that much into games anymore. Somehow I feel, this had a slight impact on my gaming habits, too and although I’m not 100% sure, I think I played less. Maybe that’s for the better, but hell, I don’t want to miss stuff. Come to think of it… the fact I played quite a lot of games in 2014 may be connected with me not having worked for 5 month… ahem…

When it comes to games in general, I thought this was a bloody good year. Klei remains a fantastic developer with additions to Don’t Starve and the release of Invisible Inc (it’s SOOOO good), Introversion showed how Early Access should be done with Prison Architect and Witcher 3 redefined (for me) how open world games should work. Witcher 3 also was an exception when it comes to playing the whole campaign or story of a game. Apart from adventures, this was the first “large” game in a long time for me to play through. Wasteland 2, Divinity: OS, Pillars… all games which I really enjoyed, but from which I just got distracted and then never touched again. I really prefer either shorter games or games that allow for 30-60 minute sessions after which you still feel like you “achieved” something or got something out of the game. Therefore, Insibile Inc. and Renowned Explorers were two of my favourite games this year.

There were also some suprises – not in gaming, but for me personally. For example, I played two mobiles games (Clash of Clans and Marvel Puzzle Quest) for an extended period of time and with “80 days”, I actually finished a game on mobiel for the first time. That said, “80 days” is a brilliant little game and not hard to play through. I also reactivated Guild Wars 2 und suddenly found myself leveling a character up to max. Really weird… I had considered myself cured from MMOs and this actually was the first time I got a character to max since WoW. A more negative suprise happened for me in Hearthstone when the “Grand Tournament” expansion killed my fun from one day to another, simply because they changed the rewards you get from the arena.

Yes, it's a stuffed unicorn.
Yes, it’s a stuffed unicorn.

So with me not having played as much as last year, I’ll start with…

Stuff I didn’t play, but desperately want to

  • Undertale (seems like a must)
  • The Beginner’s Guide (seems to make people uncomfortable)
  • Her story (seems to be a nice twist on storytelling)
  • Book of Unwritten Tales 2 (sesems to be an ejoyable classic adventure from adventure-country)
  • Satellite Reign (fuck yea, cyberpunk)
  • The Talos Principle (yes, it was released in 2014, but I still haven’t played it, ffs)

So, what did I actually play?

As I said… pretty great year. We also got a lot less drama surrounding the games industry and a lot less games that were released in a broken state or were complete failures after getting out of Early Access or Kickstarter. And when I look at next year, this only gets better: Overwatch, XCOM 2, Darkest Dungeon, the new Deus Ex, Mirror’s Edge 2, Dishonored 2… oh fuck, just hook it to my veins…

Well.. gotta be good. But despite looking forward to all of those games, my true new year’s resolutions remain:

  • Read more books (and bring yourself to read Pratchett’s last one)
  • Grab your tent and go trekking. Do another tour like 2015 in Lapland.
